the link between the two articles

Upon first reading these articles, I found them to be incredibly distinct. One was about how linguists should be giving back to the communities they use to study languages, and the other was about how the triangle was not a good example of the problem of abstraction. However, reading them more I could see a link. The idea behind the triangle being the example of abstraction involves how a triangle is an idea where several inconsistent and separate ideas are put together into one. While Lupyan argues against the triangle being a good example of the problem of abstraction, I believe the triangle can be an interesting way to link these two articles together.

Here are two separate ideas - one about geometrical figures being a way to exemplify abstraction, and another about how linguists should be giving back to the communities in which they are using to research. These are two separate ideas, yet they are linked to linguistics somehow. The article about triangles is linked to philosophy and Berkeley and Locke and Hume. The article about giving back to communities is related to all the field work research done especially in Africa. However, both are in the realm about language and the studying of it. Most importantly, they are about how it can be done better.

  1. I suppose I struggled to find a connection as well! I don't think that every article that we read needs to be strongly connected to every other article: if that was the case, we definitely wouldn't have enough material to cover 10 weeks! I appreciate the breadth and scope of their two articles; their opposite nature shows us there is a lot of diversity in linguistics, even within every subset.
